A few months ago a student brought this piece to me me wishing to learn it. The piece was transcribed from an ancient tab (which was not available to me.) The student found a few places where, for him, the fingering proved thoroughly irksome, so I sat and stared to see what was up!
Although the transcriber had added a random low open E string note here and there, it was obvious that the piece had originally been composed for a five course instrument. Particularly alarming was a footnote for the fifteenth measure indicating that the first staff-line 'e' was to played simultaneously -- on the same string -- with the f#!!! The transcriber had added that the sympathetic vibrations and attendant overtones the instrument produced from the 'e' would carry the note through its duration although it was no longer fretted. Well, the '60's weren't quite THAT good to me. Simply playing the note on the fifth string solved the durational anomaly. I have removed the superfluous low E's and I believe, even without seeing the original tab, that this is close to what the anonymous composer intended.
